The Tucson Open is a venerable event that started in 1945 and is the ninth oldest tournament on the PGA tour.
MARANA, Ariz. – Tournament officials today announced a variety of initiatives to honor the U.S. Armed Forces during the 2012 World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship, held February 20-26 at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Club, Dove Mountain in Marana, Ariz. This year’s activities will once again be part of Birdies for the Brave, a military outreach initiative proudly supported by the PGA TOUR. Outreach includes a Military Appreciation Day; free admission to the tournament for all active, retired and Reserve military personnel and their dependents; discounted tickets for veterans; and a Birdies for the Brave Patriots’ Outpost proudly supported by Tucson Appliance Company, O’Rielly Chevrolet and Pepsi.
As is the policy at many PGA TOUR events, the Accenture Match Play Championship is proud to continue the tradition of offering complimentary admission for active duty, retired and Reserve military personnel and their dependents with valid IDs (Monday-Sunday). Free tickets can be downloaded by visiting www.birdiesfothebrave.org and following the link for “Ticketing.” A valid CAC or Military ID must be presented with the ticket at the gate in order to gain entry to Accenture Match Play Championship.

In addition, the Accenture Match Play Championship is hosting Military Appreciation Day on Friday, February 24. The day will include a ceremony at 10:15 a.m. between the clubhouse and practice facility featuring a color guard, the National Anthem and a flyover by US Navy VFA-86 based out of NAS Lemoore.
Throughout the week, military will be welcomed into the Birdies for the Brave Patriots’ Outpost proudly supported by Tucson Appliance Company, O’Rielly Chevrolet and Pepsi. The structure, which is open Wednesday through Sunday to all military and their families, is located between the 14th tee box and 17th green and will offer military members free refreshments and a place to relax during the tournament. Food is provided by Chick-fil-A, Hooters, Boston’s, Nature Valley, Jelly Belly and Blue Bell Ice Cream; and beverages are provided by Pepsi.
The Accenture Match Play Championship, which is the first in a series of four World Golf Championships events in 2012, has been played in the Tucson area since 2007 and at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Club, Dove Mountain since 2009.
New to the Accenture Match Play Championship this year is “Follow the Leaders,” a program that gives fans an opportunity to fall in behind the Championship Match and follow the players down each fairway until the 2012 champion is decided. “Follow the Leaders” will give fans the unique chance to experience the crowd, walk the fairways and view the greens from a player’s perspective. All Sunday ticket holders will be invited to “Follow the Leaders” at the Accenture Match Play Championship, the only official match-play event on the PGA TOUR schedule. About the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship
The Accenture Match Play Championship is the first of four World Golf Championships events in 2012 sanctioned and organized by the International Federation of PGA Tours. The other World Golf Championships include the Cadillac Championship (Doral, Fla.), the Bridgestone Invitational (Akron, Ohio) and the HSBC Champions (Shanghai, China). About Birdies for the Brave
A PGA TOUR Charities, Inc. program, Birdies for the Brave is the PGA TOUR’s primary vehicle for supporting the brave men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces and their families. Since 2005, the TOUR has joined with PGA TOUR players and corporate partners to raise millions of dollars for military homefront groups that directly serve military men and women lost or seriously injured in performance of their duty as well as active duty military, through fundraising events at TPC clubs nationwide. Birdies for the Brave was originally created by TOUR player Phil Mickelson and his wife, Amy, to support troops injured during combat. For each birdie or eagle made by Phil throughout the season, a contribution of $100 for a birdie or $500 for an eagle is made to Homes For Our Troops and Special Operations Warrior Foundation.
