Historic Places

On our summer travels we found interesting historic lodging places.   Fred Harvey House

We had the pleasure of staying at La Posada, Winslow, AZ.  La Posada was the last great railroad hotel built by the Fred Harvey Company, which created a series of fine restaurants and hotels along the Sante Fe Railway from Cleveland to Los Angeles.  La Posada

The women who served in the establishments were known as the “Harvey Girls” ____so legendary that MGM made a musical about them starring Judy Garland, entitled The Harvey Girls.

The Harvey House in Belen NM is used as a museum and is currently being restored to the 1910 look.

The building also houses the Belen Model Railroad Club.

The Harvey House in Las Vegas, NM.  The Castaneda Hotel. The “belle” of Fred Harvey New Mexico’s railroad era hotels. An architectural gem that waits to be restored to it’s former days of glory.

Castaneda is currently all but abandoned, with only a small bar/pool hall there in the Summer of 2003. It is as large as La Posada in Winslow, approximatel 50,000 square feet. No longer owned by the railroad, but in private hands, no work is currently being done to restore it or to reopen it. There is a small Amtrak station next door.

We hope to find more of these wonderful places when out on our next travel adventure! I hope you enjoy!
